Sports Day! 

Friday 8th July 2022

On Tuesday, it was wonderful to see everyone in Herons get involved with our sports day activities. They had smiles on their faces and tried their best for house teams! 

In Literacy this week we have started our last unit on problem narrative. The children had a go at writing their own before reading a model text. In Maths, we finally finished learning about time! Herons also loved Geography this week, creating earthquakes (see pictures) and volcano fact files. 

Well done to Eloise, our star of the week this week. We have appreciated Eloise's kindness and politeness this week.

Lines of Longitude and Latitude! 

Friday 1st July 2022

In Geography this week, the children used google maps to locate some volcanoes from across the world. They plotted this on a map and had to find an estimated coordinate for it's lines of latitude and longitude. The children loved finding the locations of all the volcanoes! 

During Literacy, Herons have researched an animal of their choice and have written a non - chronological report. It was great reading so many facts about so many animals! In Maths, we have almost finished time; we found the duration, looked at a.m. and p.m. as well as the 24 hour clock. 

Art and tennis were highlights this week! Painting our clay volcanoes and working on all the skills we have learnt with Beth so far! Take a look at the photos below.

All about giraffes! 

Friday 24th June 2022

In our Reading and Literacy lessons this week, Herons have been looking at non - chronological reports. We have read and summarised them as well as write our own about giraffes. In Maths, we are learning to tell the time to the nearest 5/minute! This is a tricky concept for some, so lots of extra practise :) 

As part of the Art unit, the children learnt and created tertiary colours ready to paint their volcanoes next week. They also found out the benefits of living right near a volcano - although lots of us decided we still wouldn't want too! The class enjoyed their golf and tennis in PE this week too! 

Star of the week this week is Lily-Rose. Lily-Rose has shown a fantastic attitude towards her learning this week.

Clay Volcanoes! 

Friday 17th June 2022

The class have absolutely loved using they clay techniques to create a volcano in Art this week! I know they are also looking forward to painting them soon. We had a look at google maps and plotted some volcanoes from around the world on here and looked at their similarities and differences. 

In Maths, we have begun time! We have recapped o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. Any extra support you can give your child with telling the time would be very appreciated. We have also practised some writing skills in literacy for our non - chronological reports. We have used a wider range of sentence starters, third person and different punctuation. 

Science was enjoyed on Monday too! Herons explored different equipment and materials to help them identify push and pulls (forces).

Well done to Katie, out star of the week this week! Katie has really pushed herself in Maths over the past few weeks and her confidence is growing!

Wicked Weather! 

Friday 10th June 2022

It was a great week back to school after a week off. In Maths, we finished our work on fractions by learning how to order and compare fractions with the same denominator or numerator as well as adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. For our Literacy learning, the class began some work on non - chronological reports; we read all about Pandas and had a look at some of the vocabulary. 

Some highlights this week included some clay skills with Mrs Salmons. The class need to practise working with clay in order to make a clay volcano in a few weeks time. Herons also LOVED their first tennis session with Beth this week. They learnt how to hold the racket, played lots of mini games and even hit the ball to their partner over the net. As part of our Geography topic, wicked weather, the class had to plot the tectonic plates on a world map. They found this tricky but are very excited to learn more about volcanoes and earthquakes! 

Well done to Chase, our star of the week this week! Chase has been very focused and adaptable since coming back from half term.

Platinum Jubilee! 

Friday 27th May 2022

What a week is has been before half term! 

In Maths, we continued our work on fractions and have begun to look at fractions of amounts as well as equivalent fractions. In Literacy, we used 'The Witches' as inspiration for a hot write and the children wrote some great narrative problems. 

Other highlights include: composing on the Glockenspiels, mini Olympics in PE and our jubilee picnic (see photos below)! 

Well done to Sam, our star of the week this week! Sam produced some great work in Literacy and is a great librarian.

Bringing us together! 

Friday 13th May 2022

We really enjoyed learning and performing our Disco song this week! The children listened to a variety of disco music (particularly loved 'Good Times') and used the Glockenspiels and their voices to perform the song - have a look at the pictures. 

In Maths, the class have continued their learning on fractions; understanding tenths as well as making the whole. During Literacy, we used fairytale villains to innovate and write our own recounts. For PE, we practised bowling at the wickets in cricket. 

Another moment of 'coming together' was seen in PSHE this week. Each child made a medal for someone in the class to reward them for their talents. 

Well done to Amelia, our star of the week this week! Amelia has been working very hard in Maths and is using her knowledge of fractions to contribute in lessons.

Our Trip to Towcester Museum! 

Friday 6th May 2022

On Wednesday this week, the children enjoyed a trip to Towcester Museum to enhance their history topic about the Romans! The class were very well behaved, enjoyed the dressing up as well as playing games Roman children would've played. Have a look at the photos below :) 

Herons also learnt about thirds, unit and non - unit fractions in Maths. We boxed up a recount in Literacy, as well as digging deeper into the story of the leper in RE. 

Another highlight this week, was our pizza tasting with Mrs Salmons! Lots of us concluded that the vegetable pizza was our favourite. This will help the class design their own pizzas very soon.

Looking at fractions! 

Friday 29th April 2022

In Maths this week, we have begun learning about fractions! We now understand what makes equal parts and have begun making halves and quarters using our times table knowledge to help us. In Literacy we have worked on past tense, first person and using a wider variety of conjunctions in our writing!

Herons have also enjoyed PE this week - practising their sprinting in Athletics and enjoying a taster session from a the cricket club! History has been busy too, in preparation for our trip next week, we used lots of different sources to learn about Hadrian's wall and famous Roman roads! Science was also a success; the children tested a variety of reflective materials and put them in order from least to most reflective. 

Well done to Eli, our star of the week this week! Eli always has such a good attitude towards his learning but also his friends.

Roman Formations!

Friday 22nd April 2022

This week we have had a taster of life in the Roman army! See below pictures of our battle formations (Wedge, Pig's Head, Square and Tortoise) and guess which one is which? 

We also learnt how to measure and calculate perimeter in a variety of ways in Maths, started some work on recounts in Literacy and had a practise of some cricket skills in our sunny PE lesson!

Happy Easter!

Friday 1st April 2022

This week has been busy in the lead up to Easter! 

As part of our Literacy learning, the children wrote some Easter poems! There was lots of repetition, rhyme and alliteration included! Those of you who joined us at church on Thursday will have also heard how much we have loved practising our Easter songs. As part of French, we had a look at what Easter might be like and some French vocabulary. 

In Maths, we have been converting and comparing mm, cm and m using what we know about multiplying by 10 and 100. The children loved using their rulers to measure some of their school equipment and solve challenges. 

Herons have really enjoyed their rugby sessions with Northampton saints. This week was our last session and the children got to participate in some rugby races making sure they held the ball in two hands! Have a look at the photos.  

Our star of the week this week is Sofia. She has made some amazing progress in Maths and comes to school everyday with a fantastic attitude.

Please Mrs Butler 

Friday 25th March 2022

In our Literacy learning this week, we have looked at poem called 'Please Mrs Butler' by Alan Ahlberg. The children found the idea of a crazy teacher very funny... We used the poem to learn about rhyme, alliteration and repetition and had a go at innovating our own. 

In Maths, we have moved on to measurement and the children have spent some time using rulers and meter sticks to explore length. During History, we discovered 'Boudicca' and realised how significant she was at the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. In ICT, the children learnt some more useful tools in Purple Mash's '2email'. 

The class also enjoyed making their God and Goddess booklets this week, with the help of Mrs Shadforth and Mrs Murphy. Have a look at some of the photos they took!

Roman DT fun!  

Friday 18th March 2022

On Monday, the class absolutely loved getting ready for their DT projects with Mrs Murphy! They explored different 3D mechanisms to put in their book next week all about Roman Gods and Goddesses. 

In Maths this week, we have been finishing off our work on statistics; interpreting data using bar charts and tables. In Literacy, the children worked really hard to plan, write and edit a character and setting description using the 'The Lost Thing' by Shaun Tan. In History, we learnt about the failed invasion attempts of Julius Caesar on Britain. 

Herons also worked very hard on their assessments, completed a house competition and created some Easter themed stain glass windows. 

Well done to Sam, who was our star this week. Sam read his assessment questions carefully and contributed well on the carpet.

Julius Caesar, Gods and Goddesses and Dance!  

Friday 11th March 2022

This week Herons have been learning lots more about their Romans History Topic! We looked at the different Gods and Goddesses that the Romans would worship, asked questions about them and completed some research using the ipads. We have begun to investigate Emperor Caesar, what sort of person he was and whether or not we had any similar characteristics. In PE this week, the class used all their Roman knowledge so far to perform a 32 second motif in small groups. 

In Maths, the children seem to be enjoying exploring methods of data handling. We have looked at tally charts and pictograms. In Literacy, the class have boxed up, innovated and written their own character and setting descriptions of Roo in the harbor.

Book Bonanza!

Friday 3rd March 2022

What an exciting day the children had on Thursday for world book day! We enjoyed a quiz in assembly, sharing books with adults and children as well as completing some activities in class.

In Maths this week, the children are learning about money; converting pounds/pence as well as adding and subtracting. We are also using 'The Last Castaways' - a book in the Harry Horse series to help us with our Literacy skills and Reading lessons. 

In other areas, Herons LOVED leaning about Roman schools in History and decided that they would like to be alive in Roman times as there would be no school, unless you were very rich! They played Rugby Netball with our Saints coach as well as leaning a new song with Mrs Salmons.

A blustery week!

Friday 25th February 2022

The children have stuck straight into their learning after coming back from half term. 

We have enjoyed tag rugby, Easter Hymns and a new class novel together! 

In Reading and Literacy we have been looking at the book 'The last castaways' by Harry Horse to help us use grammar features in our sentences. In Maths, we have found out how to scale and make different ways using multiplication and division. 

We also loved 'The Dragon Song' in Music this week with Mrs Salmons. 

Our new History topic this term is Ruthless Romans - the children had some time to explore non-fiction books and learn about society in Rome this week.

Well done to Grace, who is our star this week! Grace has shown great resilience, communication and determination this week.

Tie Dye!

Friday 11th February 2022

The children have loved their t shirt dying this week! I hope they have enjoyed modelling them at home (be careful when washing them!!). Have a look at the photos below. 

In Maths, we have begun to look at formal methods for multiplication and division and in Literacy, we wrote some stories using inspiration from 'The day the crayons came home'. We also learnt about food exports and imports in Europe as well as recapping all of our learning from RE and Science. 

More highlights include; children writing their own lyrics to the tune of 'Three Little Birds' - some were even brave enough to perform! As well as this, we explored ways to make ourselves and others feel positive as part of mental health day. You will hopefully see our affirmations on the fence after half term!

The Day the Crayons Quit!

Friday 28th January 2022

The children have absolutely loved reading the book 'The Day the Crayons Quit' by Drew Daywalt as part of their reading and literacy lessons this week. In Reading, we have been summarising all the different crayons and their complaints as well writing cohesively using conjunctions in Literacy. 

In Maths, we have used what we already know to help us solve related calculations and recapped the column methods of addition and subtraction. Herons class enjoyed Science, Music and PE this week too! They observed a range of food label. played a song on the Glockenspiels, did some interval training on the track and explored different jumping activities!

Lots of Exploring!  

Friday 21st January 2022

In Literacy this week, the children have been planning and writing their own poems about the Mediterranean sea. Lots of amazing vocabulary was used as well as a range of similes! It made us want to go on holiday, looking at all the bright photos!

During our Maths lessons, we have explored the 4 and 8 times table. Although we need lots more practise on our eights, we are beginning to spot some patterns to help us! 

We really enjoyed our Geography this week! Once we had learnt about the 4 regions of Europe; in pairs we made posters about Northern European counties. Take a look at the pictures. As well as this, we loved our drama is PSHE and having a go at some different yoga poses in PE - very relaxing!

Northern Lights 

Friday 14th January 2022

In Literacy this week we have focused on the language we can use for poetry. We brainstormed adjectives, verbs and similes using the Northern Lights as inspiration. We then wrote our own verses for our Northern Lights poem! 

In Maths, we have been multiplying and dividing by 3 and getting ready to do the same with 4! The children are getting quicker at their times tables but any extra practice at home would be brilliant :) 

We also started cross country - running round the track for 12 minutes! We will work on this over the next few weeks and see if we can build up our lap totals (see below!). We enjoyed finding capital cities in Geography, finding ER verbs in French as well as listening to some of Bod Marley's music!

Happy New Year! 

Friday 7th January 2022

Even though it has only been three days, Herons have been very busy this week!

We started our year looking at our new book - Ice Palace by Robert Swindells! The children are looking forward to finding out about the story next week! In Maths we have started to look at division and have explored the difference between grouping and sharing and using our 2, 5 and 10 times table to help us. The children also had a go at writing and reading some poems in Literacy to begin our new poetry unit! 

We also braved the freezing weather to complete a health and fitness circuit! There were some great star jumps, squats and shuttle runs. As part of our new Geography topic, the children explored atlases to find lots of different countries in Europe.

Christmas Holidays! 

Friday 17th December 2021 

We started our week by recapping our 2 and 5 times tables in Maths and writing our letters in Literacy. 

However, we also enjoyed our final week before Christmas by watching Wrens Nativity, Carol singing at St Barts and enjoying a superb Christmas dinner together with our homemade hats! 

The children loved finishing their DT net projects and enjoyed composing some Christmas themed music with their partner using the Glockenspiels. 

We celebrated with Reuben this week, who was our star of the week. Reuben has worked so hard recently and has made great progress :) 

It has been a fantastic and to the term and I'd like to say thank you to everyone who sent the adults in Herons a gift! See you Wednesday 5th January 2022!

It's Beginning to look a lot like Christmas! 

Friday 10th December 2021 

It is beginning to feel Christmassy in Herons this week! We got to watch Robins and Magpies perform their Nativity 'Prickly Hay' and make some very unique Christmas card with Mrs Salmons. We even have some small decorations...

In our Maths lessons this week, we have moved onto multiplication and division. The children have been using their knowledge of 'groups' from year 2 to help them this week when looking at arrays and equal groups, as well as the multiplication symbol. In Literacy we have done lots of boxing up and editing ready to write our letters next week! We also enjoyed some laps round the track and a New Age Kurling competition in PE.

Assessments! 

Friday 3rd December 2021 

This week the children have really focused when completing their assessments. I am really pleased with the progress we have made as a class in Maths and Reading! 

We spent our Literacy lessons looking at punctuation, adverbs, conjunctions and prepositions! Hopefully the children will use these to include in their Mrs LaRue letters next week! In Maths, we finally finished addition and subtraction; we will continue to use this learning in Arithmetic and other areas of Maths! 

Some highlights the children really enjoyed this week; in Science they loved looking at fossils and finding out how these are formed, in DT we had a go at making 3D nets and we loved watching the Year 5 brass concert! 

Well done to Eliza, our star of the week this week! Eliza has made so much progress in Maths and is always so polite and kind to others.

Dear Mrs LaRue...

Friday 25th November 2021 

In Reading and Literacy lessons this week, we have been looking at letters! The children have loved using Dear Mrs LaRue to help them with this. It's a book about a dog that just wants to be collected by his owner from 'obedience school'. So far, we have recapped using a capital letter for proper nouns and using question and exclamation marks. In Reading, we are looking at the 'explain' viper, which can be tricky! The book has helped us so much with this! 

In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers using counters alongside the column method and have particularly enjoyed History this week - learning all about Stonehenge. This is linked to this week's homework, which will be on MS teams. Please let me know before Thursday if there're any issues with this :)

Stone Age Diary Writing! 

Friday 19th November 2021 

This week the children spent their Literacy lessons innovating, planning and writing a diary as if they were in the Stone Age! Their history learning as well as experience day last week has really helped them with this. 

We carried on adding and subtracting in Maths using the column method and enjoyed hockey and kurling in PE! In RE the children recapped the story of Noah and used it as inspiration to write their own promises. 

A highlight this week was reading buddies. All of Herons were so focused when reading to a partner from Kestrels; they worked hard on their fluency and expression! Kestrel class gave us some great feedback.

Prehistoric Experience Day! 

Friday 12th November 2021 

The children were lucky enough to have such a fantastic experience day on Tuesday! They got to handle artefacts from prehistoric times, dress up in stone age clothes as well make a fire and witness bow and arrow shooting! Have a look at the pictures below :) In History lessons this week, we also looked at different cave paintings found them from all over the world and thought about the clues these give us about life in the stone age. 

We also had time to learn about prepositions in Literacy (words that tell us where or when something is in regards to something else) as well as begin to look at column methods of addition and subtraction in Maths. The children also had a brilliant Science lesson with Mrs Barnett - testing properties of different rocks. 

Well done to Gabriel, our star of the week this week! Gabriel is a fantastic learner in our class, spends extra time reading at home and was very respectful in the remembrance assembly.

Stones and Bones! 

Friday 5th November 2021 

The class have loved the introduction to our new History topic this term 'Stones and Bones', where they will be looking at the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age as well as Rocks as part of their Science! The children had some time to collect facts from a range of books, create some cave art and make a prehistoric timeline. They should also be able to tell you the difference between A.D. and B.C! 

In Maths, the children are continuing with their addition and subtraction of 10s and 100s and noticed that when adding or subtracting 100s only the 100s change! In Literacy and Reading, we looked at the book 'Stone Age Boy' to help us with our learning. 

They also loved PE this week! On Wednesday, Coach Louis came in to do some Hockey with us and we had a Kurling practice in the hall on Thursday!

Well done to Louis, who is our star of the week this week! Louis has really got stuck in to our History topic and has been very kind.

Horrid Henry Hot Writes! 

Friday 22nd October 2021

The children have loved listening to Horrid Henry stories this week and using it to help them with their ideas in Literacy. We wrote all about Horrid Henry and then the children wrote all about his brother, Perfect Peter! 

In Maths, we carried on learning addition and subtraction of 1 digit numbers and did some quick times table practise! The children also enjoyed Music with Mrs Salmons, looking at Netball positions in PE and creating a dot landscape in Art. 

We finished off looking at The UK in Geography as well as Plants in Science and the children successfully completed some quizzes using their knowledge! 

Special well done to Oscar, who received star of the week this week, for his positivity and kindness.

Goldilocks and Horrid Henry! 

Friday 15th October 2021

In Literacy we have been looking at character descriptions. We use Goldilocks to help us with this. The children are really enjoying the Horrid Henry books in class so we are using them to help us with our writing ad well as our reading. 

During Maths, Herons have been working hard to add and subtract 1 digit numbers from 3 digit numbers that cross 10s. We have looked at lots of different methods and the children have had to choose the one they find most efficient! 

They loved PE this week and worked well in teams to get as many points using their netball shooting skills; I think we are ready for a mini game next week! Have a look at the pictures below.

Glockenspiel fun! 

Friday 8th October 2021

In Music lessons with Mrs Salmons this week, the children really enjoyed finding out facts, playing instruments and listening to some solos on the Glockenspiel! As well as this, Herons class took part in a 12 minute run as part of some cross country training; the children were really supportive of one another and cheered each other on. 

We started adding and subtracting hundreds and ones from 3 digit numbers in Maths this week and practised our 5 times tables. Greens Norton went to St Barts on Thursday for Harvest and I would just like to say well done to all the children but an extra special thank you to; Noah, Arthur, Gabriel, Sofia and Sam, who all read some prayers aloud.

Dots, summaries and hot writes! 

Friday 1st October 2021

In our literacy lessons this week the children have been planning, editing and writing a setting description of a volcano called 'Mount Meriapi'. We have used our class book to help us with this. The children have had to summarise some stories from the Bible as part of their guided reading, which helped us learn about Adam and Eve in RE! They understand how important summarising is because it is very tricky to tell someone the whole story. 

We finished off looking at place value in Maths and the children counted in 50s by spotting the links from the 5 times table. Earlier in the week, the children enjoyed mixing and creating secondary and tertiary colours in the pointillism style (see photos below). We also enjoyed some drama to help us solve problems in PSHE. 

Our star of the week this week was Noah. Noah is new to our school this year and has been a kind, helpful and polite friend.

Innovation Week! 

Friday 24th September 2021

In Literacy lessons this week the children have been helping to innovate our class setting description ready for writing our own next week! The children have tried really hard to use a variety of conjunctions, expanded noun phrases and similes in their writing.

During Maths, we have been learning to calculate more or less and have begun to use <,> and = signs as well as learning and practising number bonds to 100. I have sent a parentmail with these facts on to help you support your child.

Elsewhere, we have been busy creating an experiment in Science, practising our defending skills in PE and we have looked at counties of the UK!

100s, 10s and 1s! 

Friday 17th September 2021

In Maths this week, we have begun understanding and using hundreds and 3 digit numbers in our learning. We used lots of equipment to explore this concept before moving on to tricky problems to solve. In Literacy, the class continued their work on setting descriptions making sure we use capital letters, full stops, conjunctions and expanded noun phrases in our writing. 

In Geography we explored and located different UK cities on our own maps; the children loved spotting the different locations (see pictures below)! Herons have also practised the 4 types of Netball passes in PE as well as enjoying some new French vocabulary!

Our First Week of Year 3 

Friday 10th September 2021

In Herons this week, we have been busy learning about our new Geography topic 'Welcome Home'. We recapped the 4 countries in the UK using atlases and made a key identifying which was which. We can tell you their capital cities and some of us plotted these on our own maps! As part of this learning, the children did some skyline art based on the four capital cities, which some brought home to you! Others are on display!

As well as this, we got stuck in to our class book 'The Firework Maker's Daughter' by Phillip Pullman. This will help us with our learning in Literacy and Guided Reading. The children also had a look at some French sounds, recapped plants from year 2 and learnt about a new song with Mrs Salmons in Music!

Sam is our star of the week this week - Sam showed all three school rules and had produced some well- presented, thoughtful and impressive work already!
